Our farm is designed using the “deep water culture” (DWC) method where plants float on styrofoam rafts allowing their roots to be suspended underneath within nutrient-rich water. This form of aquaponics is great for growing leafy greens such as lettuce, bok choy, swiss chard, and herbs. As a result, AquaGrow farms mainly focuses on the above, though occasionally we experiment with a new variety to see how well it performs in our system.
One of the newest varieties of lettuce we’ve grown is Trunchas, which is a purplish red dwarf form of romaine. We found that this variety grew extremely uniform and had a fantastic germination rate. Time will tell if this unique lettuce is a favourite among our food bank clients!
