Last month we chronicled the beginning of our pea shoots microgreens trials and are happy to report that our soilless method has worked fantastically! We have consistently been able to harvest roughly 6-7 inch shoots within 10 days with decent success.
Several methods were experimented with, but what seemed to work best was a plastic mesh sheet within an additional perforated tray placed in a standard 10×20 seedling flat. This creates a small air gap between the water reservoir in the bottom flat and the peas. Without this air gap, the peas tended to rot more readily and their roots were less likely to be oriented in the same direction.
Time will soon tell whether or not these tender and versatile shoots will be a favourite among our food bank clients!
